Blackjack compares a participant’s hand with a dealer hand. The aim is to finish closer to 21 without exceeding it; a participant who goes over 21 loses immediately under standard rules.
Its precise origin is unresolved, but historians generally connect it to the French game Vingt-et-Un. Stories about a promotional ace-and-black-jack payout are often repeated, yet the history of the modern name is less certain than the legend suggests.

French twenty-one games used flexible ace values and the central objective of approaching 21 without passing it.

Today
Deck count, dealer action, payout ratios, and restrictions differ, so a generic probability cannot describe every table.
Core structure
Rules vary by jurisdiction and venue. These are durable concepts, not a substitute for checking the actual rules in front of you.
Number cards use face value; tens and face cards count as 10; an ace may count as 1 or 11 when the higher value does not bust the hand.
A soft total counts an ace as 11 without exceeding 21; a hard total either has no ace or must count it as 1.
The dealer follows fixed draw and stand rules rather than choosing freely.
Unlike a wheel spin, the composition of cards remaining changes as cards are dealt from a finite shoe.
